How to travel to the Physics Department

& Photon Science Institute

Taxi ranks can be found at both Piccadilly and Victoria Railway stations. Fare to the University is typically £3.00-£5.00. Fare from Manchester Airport is approximately £15.00. The front entrance to The Schuster Laboratory is on Brunswick Street. The entrance of the PSI is off Upper Brook Street, then go up to the 3rd floor in the centre building, cross the overpass walkway & enter the PSI.

By Bus to the University Campus.

From Piccadilly Railway Station walk west on London Road to Piccadilly Bus Station for any of the following services:

(All these services travel down Oxford Road unless marked otherwise.)

From Victoria Station, use services 45a, 46, 47, 50 (via Upper Brook St) 191, 197. There is a tram link from Victoria Station to Piccadilly Bus and Railway Stations.


By Road. 


All approach routes to the University campus area are clearly signposted ‘Universities’.

Parking for the Physics Department & PSI is located in the multi-storey car park the corner of Booth Street East and Upper Brook Street (note there is no right turn from Upper Brook Street into Booth Street East from the City Centre). Parking costs approximately £12.00 per day. The Physics Department is at the far (south) end of the uncovered car park. The PSI is next to the car park.

        From the M62 (from the West).


Leave M62 at J12 and join the M602 Salford for 4 miles.


At motorway end join A57 Manchester, joining A57M after 1 mile.

Leave at A34 (signed Congleton), bear left (following signs for Universities), then get into the right hand lane.

At traffic lights, turn right into Grosvenor Street, then left onto Oxford Road.

Turn left at the traffic lights onto Booth Street East, then right at the lights into the multi-storey car park.

From the M62 (from the East).


Leave M62 at J18 to join the M60 (Manchester).

At the next roundabout, join the A576 (Manchester Central).

After approximately 2 miles, bear left at the traffic lights onto A665. Continue along this road (Cheetham Hill Road) for approximately 2 miles to traffic lights (MEN Arena is directly ahead).

Bear left, staying on the A665, remaining in the left-hand lane, following signs for Universities and Inner Ring Road).

Turn left into Rochdale Road (A664) at the traffic lights, then right at the next lights (Thompson Street).

Turn right at the lights onto Oldham Road (A62), then left at lights onto Gt. Ancoats Street (A665).

Continue along Ancoats Street through several sets of lights. For easiest access to the Physics Dept. we recommend that you do not follow the ‘Universities’ sign onto the A57(M), but continue along the A665, crossing the junction with the A635 (Ashton Old Rd.). Continue straight ahead on Chancellor Lane, past the Great Universal Stores, across the lights at the A57, then turn right at the next lights onto the A6 (there is a MacDonalds at this junction).

At the roundabout (Apollo theatre on right hand side) take the 1st exit onto Brunswick Street. Turn right at the lights onto Upper Brook Street, then left into Booth Street East and left at the lights into the multi-storey car park.

 


From the M56


At the motorway end, continue along the A5103 for approximately 4 miles.

Turn right at the traffic lights (signed Whitworth Art Gallery, Museum, Universities).

At next lights, (Whitworth Pub), turn left onto Oxford Road.

Continue through the campus, turning right into Booth Street East immediately after passing under the Precinct centre bridge across Oxford Road. Turn right at the next lights into the multi-storey car park.

From the  M67.


At the motorway end, continue along the A57 for approximately 3 miles towards the city centre.

At the roundabout (Apollo theatre on left hand side) take the 2nd exit onto Brunswick Street. Turn right at the lights onto Upper Brook Street, then left into Booth Street East and left at the lights into the multi-storey car park.
